The Northeast snowstorm has caused significant disruptions to air travel, with over 1,400 flights canceled and nearly 700 delayed across the United States. Major airports in New York and Boston are particularly affected, with LaGuardia Airport experiencing the highest percentage of cancellations and Boston Logan International Airport also severely impacted.
Travelers scheduled to fly today should stay updated by checking their airline’s app for the latest departure information. Many domestic carriers have issued travel advisories and are waiving change fees and fare differences to accommodate affected passengers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and United Airlines.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented a ground stop at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and warned of potential ground stops or delay programs at several other airports in the region, including Boston, Newark, LaGuardia, and others.
Deicing measures at affected airports are contributing to delays, with regional carriers like Republic and Endeavor Air canceling a significant portion of their flights. JetBlue, with hubs in Boston and New York, is among the major domestic airlines most impacted by cancellations.
The New York City area is expected to bear the brunt of the winter weather, with freezing rain transitioning to snowfall, prompting a winter storm watch until 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. Five to eight inches of snow are forecasted for the day. Additionally, below-freezing temperatures and arctic wind chills are affecting areas from the Rocky Mountains to the Midwest.
