A new Delta Sky Club is set to open next year in Charlotte, the airline’s first lounge at North Carolina’s largest airport.

The airline’s expansion at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is well underway, with the renovated Concourse A scheduled for completion next autumn. When the project is complete, Delta will debut 10 new gates and a new lounge.

Charlotte has served as a major hub for American Airlines for more than four decades, as the legacy carrier operates more than 70% of all flights from the airport, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

By comparison, Delta accounts for just 2% of flights out of Charlotte – but the Atlanta-based carrier is poised to grow in this southern city when Concourse A is fully renovated. The opening of a new lounge by an old competitor signals further growth for the airport and potentially even lower fares as competition increases further down the line.

Delta’s network of Sky Clubs is considered one of the best airport lounges for travellers looking to dine and relax before their flight. In 2023 alone, the airline opened a second 14,000-square-foot location at its New York-JFK hub and expanded its outposts in Boston and Nashville.

As these lounges have grown in popularity, the airline has taken several steps in recent years to restrict access. Currently, only annual Sky Club memberships are available for purchase by elite Delta Medallion members. Along with an eligible premium cabin ticket, select Delta co-branded cards with American Express still allow unlimited access to the Sky Clubs, but access will be capped at 15 annual visits in 2025 to reduce overcrowding.
