If you’ve ever tuned in to one of the many, many murder mystery series set in an English village, you’ll know their charm. The UK has some corners so aesthetically pleasing that they can make murder seem like a quaint local drama.
Okay, maybe not IRL. But we do have a number of very pretty villages dotted around the country. In fact, two of them have just been voted the most picturesque in the world.
The experts at Faraway Furniture went through the most popular villages on Instagram to come up with a list of the most beautiful in the world. The charming Cotswold village of Bibury, which was once described by artist William Morris as the ‘most beautiful’ village in the country, came in at number fourteen.
Bibury is home to the famous Arlington Row, a series of medieval buildings that were converted into weavers’ cottages in the seventeenth century and are now some of the most photographed houses in Britain. The village is also less than two hours’ drive from central London.
Seaside resort Staithes in North Yorkshire also made the list. Ranked seventeenth in the world, Staithes sits on a hillside overlooking the Yorkshire coast and was once one of the largest fishing ports in the North East. Like any great village, it has winding cobbled streets and charming cottages, as well as a small beach and cliff-top paths.
And these two British villages are in some very impressive company. The likes of Burano and Cinque Terre in Italy and Hobbiton in New Zealand have also made the list.
