As Japan prepares for one of its most anticipated international events in April, showcasing the latest in technology and innovation, the country is seeing an increasing influx of global travelers. In light of this rising demand, UnionPay International is expanding its payment network and capabilities across Japan, providing a secure and convenient way for visitors to experience the country’s offerings.
This surge in tourism is evident in Japan’s impressive visitor numbers. In February 2025, the country welcomed 3.26 million international visitors, marking a 16.9% increase from the previous year and setting a new record. South Korea and China led the influx of visitors. In 2024, international tourists spent a total of ¥8.14 trillion in Japan, with the largest shares going toward accommodation (¥2.74 trillion), shopping (¥2.4 trillion), and dining (¥1.2 trillion). These figures highlight the significant economic impact of tourism and underscore the need for efficient and seamless payment solutions.
