Vietnam has announced that Phu Quoc, a coastal city in Kien Giang Province, will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in 2027. This will be the third time Vietnam hosts the event, following previous summits in Hanoi (2006) and Da Nang (2017).
To prepare for the major international gathering, which will welcome leaders from 21 APEC member economies, thousands of delegates, global business leaders, and international media, the government is launching significant development projects across the island.
Major Upgrades to Transport Infrastructure
Phu Quoc is undergoing extensive upgrades to its transportation network. This includes improvements to the Phu Quoc International Airport, An Thoi International Port, and several key roads.
The city will build a 4E-class airport. Upgrades will include larger terminals for passengers and cargo, expanded VIP lounges, new aircraft parking areas, and an improved runway.
Phu Quoc International Airport will expand to cover 1,073 hectares. The existing runway will be extended to 3.5 kilometers. A second runway, 3.3 kilometers long, will be added. A new international terminal (T2) will be built, with the capacity to serve up to 20 million passengers. The expansion will also include a VIP terminal, space for 70 aircraft, cargo facilities, and hangars.
At sea, the An Thoi International Port will expand to 100 hectares. It will be able to welcome the world’s largest cruise ships, including the Icon of the Seas, which can carry between 7,000 and 10,000 passengers.
On land, local roads will also see major improvements. Provincial Road 975 will be widened, and a new urban railway line will be developed. The APEC Avenue project will create a major east-west road that links existing highways to the summit venue. This road will be 68 meters wide and around 3 kilometers long.
Additional infrastructure projects will support the city’s growth. These include new reservoirs, water treatment plants, wastewater systems, and upgrades to the Duong Dong River. Solid waste treatment facilities will also be built.
Development of the APEC Multifunctional Complex
The centerpiece of the preparations will be the APEC Multifunctional Complex. It will host nearly 15,000 people and include several major buildings.
The complex will feature a 10,000-square-metre conference and exhibition center with space for 3,000 to 3,500 guests. A multifunctional auditorium, a large APEC Square, and an international press center for 3,000 to 4,000 journalists will also be included.
A mixed-use high-rise zone will offer hotels, a duty-free shopping center, and a cultural and arts center. This area will have a performance hall for 3,000 to 3,500 people and will host shows by world-renowned entertainment companies. A large dining area will be able to serve 3,000 to 4,000 guests at once.
Phu Quoc is already a popular tourist destination. It is home to attractions like the Kiss Bridge, the Hon Thom cable car — the world’s longest three-rope cable car — and the Kiss of the Sea multimedia show with nightly fireworks. The new complex aims to enhance the island’s appeal and support long-term tourism growth.
Phu Quoc has repeatedly been ranked among the top beach destinations in Asia and the world by international media and travel organizations.
