China is actively promoting visa-free access to the Schengen Area. The country is urging Portugal to support this initiative. At the same time, China is seeking reciprocal agreements with multiple European nations.
The move aims to simplify travel for Chinese citizens visiting Europe. It also encourages stronger ties between China and Schengen member states. The countries involved include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Cyprus. Others are Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, and Germany. Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, and Italy are also part of the discussions.
Additionally, China is engaging Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, and Malta. The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia are included too. Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland round out the list.
Beijing emphasizes the importance of mutual benefits. The policy would boost tourism and business exchanges. It reflects China’s push for smoother international mobility.
Portugal’s backing is seen as crucial. The country has strong historical ties with China. A reciprocal deal could set an example for other EU nations.
Experts say this effort aligns with China’s broader strategy. The goal is to strengthen global connectivity. Visa-free access would mark a major step in China-EU relations.
The outcome depends on negotiations. Both sides must agree on terms that ensure security and fairness. If successful, travel between China and Europe could become much easier.
