The European Commission (EC) announced on April 2 that it is offering 36,000 free travel passes to 18-year-olds in Europe through its DiscoverEU program. Applications for the passes are now open, and successful applicants will have the opportunity to travel across Europe by train for up to 30 days between July 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026.
To be eligible, applicants must be born between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007, and must be residents of the EU or countries associated with the Erasmus+ program. This includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey. Applications will close on April 16 at 12:00 CEST.
Those interested in applying can do so through the European Youth Portal. They must complete a brief quiz about the European Union. Travel passes will be awarded to the highest-ranking applicants until all passes are distributed.
Once selected, travelers will have the flexibility to plan their own European journey or choose from suggested routes. One option is the New European Bauhaus Route, which highlights vibrant, sustainable cities. Another option is the Green Route, which features some of Europe’s most eco-friendly cities and natural destinations, including award-winning Green Capitals and Green Leaf cities. Along the way, travelers will have access to a discount card that provides offers on transport, museums, food, accommodation, sports, and more in 36 countries.
The DiscoverEU program is designed to be inclusive, with special support available for participants with disabilities, health conditions, or fewer opportunities. Additional arrangements are also provided for those living in remote areas, islands, or outermost regions.
Since its launch in 2018 and its integration into the Erasmus+ program in 2021, DiscoverEU has already awarded over 355,000 travel passes. Participants are also invited to join the #DiscoverEU official group, which has more than 106,000 members who share experiences and tips.
