Amtrak has been making headlines recently, from facing Elon Musk’s privatization remarks to launching exciting new features for travelers. The national rail service just introduced a clever color-coding system on its Phase VII trains, designed to help passengers quickly find their assigned cars. Passengers boarding Amtrak trains may have spotted fresh green, blue, and red markings near the doors. These colors serve as visual guides, making it easier to locate the right car at a glance. Green marks standard Coach Class cars, blue indicates Business Class, and red designates First Class accommodations. The repainting work took place at Amtrak’s maintenance hub in Bear, Delaware. While most travelers appreciate the new system, some have been surprised by the color choices, with one passenger humorously noting, “I just didn’t think it’d be green!”
The Phase VII design refresh, which debuted in late 2024, has earned praise from regular riders for its clean, modern look. Amtrak plans to apply this updated livery to 44 trains by the end of 2025, covering Horizon, Amfleet, and Superliner models. Online discussions reveal enthusiastic feedback, with comments like, “This makes boarding so much simpler!” and “Can’t wait to spot these on my next trip.”
In addition to the visual upgrades, Amtrak is reintroducing a beloved feature: the Sightseer Lounge on the Texas Eagle route between Chicago and San Antonio. Removed in 2020 due to pandemic-related service cuts, the lounge car’s return has been highly anticipated. Its comeback on March 3 for westbound trips and March 5 for eastbound journeys is a major win for passengers facing the route’s 32-hour duration. The Texas Eagle also offers full dining car service and private First Class rooms, serving key cities like St. Louis, Dallas, and Los Angeles.
These changes reflect Amtrak’s commitment to improving long-distance travel. The intuitive color-coding system streamlines boarding, while the restored lounge car adds comfort and scenic enjoyment to extended trips.
