This month, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) celebrates its 70th anniversary, reflecting on its achievements since its founding on April 1, 1955. The milestone will be honored through a series of events and activities across the island, highlighting the board’s role in making Jamaica a top Caribbean travel destination.
The celebrations will begin on April 6 with a special church service, followed by an Anniversary Awards Gala recognizing the contributions of former employees. A documentary and virtual exhibition, curated by the Clive Taffe library, will also showcase the history and successes of the JTB. Additionally, the board will engage with Tourism Action Clubs, a program that educates secondary and tertiary students about the importance of tourism to Jamaica’s economy.
Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, shared his pride in the board’s progress: “When the Jamaica Tourist Board was first established, Jamaica was an emerging destination, attracting just over 100,000 visitors annually. By the end of 2025, we expect nearly five million visitors—a significant achievement that reflects the dedication of the Jamaican people.”
He also praised the country’s growth, stating, “Our investments, infrastructure, and earnings have grown like never before, and I extend my gratitude to our workers and partners whose hard work has made Jamaica a global tourism leader.”
Since its creation, the JTB has worked tirelessly to promote Jamaica’s natural beauty, culture, and hospitality, positioning the island as a premier Caribbean destination. Its efforts have played a vital role in boosting Jamaica’s economy through tourism.
Donovan White, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, spoke about the future: “As we celebrate 70 years of the Jamaica Tourist Board, we are inspired to build on this incredible legacy and continue shaping a brighter future for Jamaican tourism.”
He added, “We are embracing digital tools, targeted marketing campaigns, and strong partnerships to increase global awareness and demand. This is just the beginning of a new chapter for tourism in Jamaica, and we are committed to its ongoing success.”
