Accra, Ghana – March 27, 2025 – South Africa and Ghana are taking major steps to strengthen their tourism partnership. At a high-profile meeting in Accra, officials from both countries discussed ways to attract more travelers, improve flight connections, and simplify visa processes.
The event, hosted by the South African High Commission at the Kempinski Hotel, brought together tourism leaders to explore new opportunities for growth. Dr. Geoffrey, representing Ghana’s Ministry of Tourism, shared exciting news: trips from Ghana to South Africa have surged by 140%. However, he stressed the need to make Ghana a top choice for South African tourists too.
To achieve this, Dr. Geoffrey proposed three key steps:
- A joint marketing campaign to promote both countries as must-visit destinations.
- Faster visa processing to make travel easier.
- More direct flights between Ghana and South Africa.
Mrs. Alisa Osei-Asamoah, President of Ghana’s Tour Operators Union, agreed. She highlighted Ghana’s growing role as a key market for South African tourism, with more Ghanaians traveling there each year.
South Africa’s Tourism Minister, Hon. Patricia De Lille, also spoke at the event. She shared that South Africa welcomed nearly 9 million African visitors last year, with Ghana playing a big part. Thanks to a 2022 visa waiver, over 36,000 Ghanaians visited South Africa, boosting tourism numbers.
The meeting showed a strong commitment from both nations to deepen ties, making travel smoother and creating new economic opportunities. With easier visas, better flights, and shared marketing, Ghana and South Africa aim to become top travel partners in Africa.
