Reviving History: Kashmir’s Ancient Capital Parihaspora Set to Attract Global Tourists

by gongshang06

The Jammu & Kashmir government is ramping up efforts to promote the Parihaspora archaeological site in Baramulla as a key heritage destination. Officials told the Assembly on Monday that the site is being actively marketed to national and international tourists. Already featured on Jammu & Kashmir’s heritage tourism map, Parihaspora is poised to become a major attraction.

When Pattan MLA Javid Riyaz asked about steps to boost tourism at Parihaspora, the Tourism Department confirmed aggressive promotions. Videos, brochures, and participation in travel fairs aim to raise the site’s profile globally.

Parihaspora, locally called Kani Shahar, was once Kashmir’s capital. Built by King Lalitaditya Muktapida between 695 and 731 AD, it sits on a plateau near the Jhelum River, 20 km from Srinagar. The 12th-century text Rajatarangini records Lalitaditya’s grand constructions here, including temples and a copper Buddha statue. Though the capital later shifted, Parihaspora remains a treasure trove of Kashmir’s past.

To improve visitor experience, a cafeteria opened in 2017 will soon be renovated under next year’s budget. The Tourism Department is also upgrading facilities to make the site more tourist-friendly.
