Northern New York is facing a steep drop in Canadian tourists. The North Country Chamber of Commerce says ongoing trade tensions are to blame.
New data shows a troubling trend. Last month, the region saw a 16% decrease in visitors. More than 40% of scheduled tour groups have also been canceled.
Local leaders are taking action. The Adirondack Coast team has launched a new campaign to attract tourists. They’ve rolled out bilingual welcome signs in French and English. Businesses are being asked to display the posters and even hang Canadian flags. Staff are also encouraged to greet visitors in French.
Efforts to fix the problem are expanding. Next month, the Franklin County Legislature will meet with officials in Ontario. Their goal? To find solutions and bring back Canadian travelers.
The stakes are high. With tourism declining, local shops and restaurants are feeling the strain. The chamber hopes these new steps will help turn things around.
