Frontier Airlines is bringing more travel choices to San Diego this summer. The low-cost carrier will launch three new direct flights from San Diego International Airport (SAN).
Starting June 12, Frontier will fly daily between San Diego and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The next day, June 13, the airline will begin service to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) with four weekly flights. It will also start flying three times a week to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).
These additions expand Frontier’s San Diego network to eight routes. The airline already connects SAN to Denver (DEN), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Las Vegas (LAS), Phoenix (PHX), and San Francisco (SFO).
However, Frontier faces tough competition. On the San Diego-to-Salt Lake City route, for example, 220 flights are already scheduled for June. Major airlines dominate this market. Similarly, the San Diego-Chicago route has about 270 flights in June, mostly operated by American and United.
Frontier’s strategy is simple: offer cheaper tickets with fewer extras. This approach has worked in the past, but bigger airlines now have budget-friendly options too. To stay competitive, Frontier is adding new perks. Passengers can pay extra to block middle seats for more space. The airline also plans to introduce first-class seating later this year.
Frontier has shown it won’t hesitate to cut underperforming routes. For now, travelers in San Diego have more options—but only time will tell if these new flights succeed.
