Italian Tourist Town Overrun by Swarms of Midges, Locals Demand State of Emergency

by gongshang08

The picturesque coastal town of Orbetello in Tuscany, Italy, is facing a crisis as massive swarms of midges have taken over the area. These tiny, mosquito-like insects have become so unbearable that residents and officials are calling for a state of emergency. The infestation has disrupted daily life and devastated the local tourism industry, with many visitors canceling their trips due to the unbearable conditions.

Orbetello is usually a popular destination for travelers, but the midge invasion has forced restaurants, shops, and outdoor attractions to close or operate at reduced capacity. Residents describe being unable to leave their homes without being covered in insects, making simple activities like walking or dining outdoors impossible. Mayor Andrea Casamenti expressed the town’s desperation, stating, “We’re at our wit’s end.” A special commission has been established to address the crisis, but so far, no effective solution has been found.

Authorities have already spent over $327,000 on pesticides, but the measures have backfired. Instead of eliminating the midges, the chemicals have left streets littered with dead bugs, creating foul odors and unsanitary conditions. Many locals are also concerned about the health risks of prolonged pesticide exposure, particularly for children and vulnerable groups. With no relief in sight, families have been forced to stay indoors, drawing comparisons to the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fishermen in the area believe the midge explosion is linked to an ecological imbalance in the Orbetello Lagoon. Normally, juvenile fish keep the midge population in check by feeding on their larvae. However, a sudden drop in oxygen levels last year caused a mass die-off of these fish, allowing the midge larvae to thrive unchecked. Midges typically flourish in warm, humid conditions, and Italy’s recent weather patterns have only worsened the infestation. While adult midges only live for a few days, the sheer number of larvae means the town could be dealing with the problem for weeks—or even longer if no solution is found.

Frustrated residents have launched a petition, *Save the Orbetello Lagoon*, which has already garnered over 19,000 signatures. They are urging the government to declare a state of emergency, which would provide additional funding to combat the infestation and support struggling businesses. For now, Orbetello remains under siege by the relentless swarms, with its tourism-dependent economy hanging in the balance. Unless a solution is found soon, the town risks long-term damage to its reputation as a beloved travel destination.
