Yellowstone National Park is reminding visitors that the famous Old Faithful geyser is currently off-limits due to seasonal closures. While this may disappoint some travelers, the park offers a solution: a 24/7 live stream of the geyser’s eruptions.
Every year, Yellowstone closes many roads and areas during winter and early spring for plowing and maintenance. This year is no different—most park roads remain shut until mid-April. Unfortunately, this means visitors cannot drive to Old Faithful right now. The park shared a lighthearted post on Instagram, showing the difference between how visitors expect to see Old Faithful in person and how they’ll actually see it online. The message was clear: for now, the only way to watch the geyser erupt is through Yellowstone’s live webcams.
Yellowstone has nine webcams placed around the park, including one focused on Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin. These cameras provide real-time views, so nature lovers can still enjoy the spectacle from anywhere in the world.
In addition to the Old Faithful closure, Yellowstone recently confirmed the first bear tracks of the season, reminding visitors to stay alert and follow bear safety guidelines. Some areas, like Mammoth Hot Springs, are also experiencing icy conditions. Drivers should be cautious, and boardwalks may be slippery.
For those planning summer activities, Yellowstone announced its boating season will begin May 24. Visitors hoping to boat in the park should check the National Park Service website for details on required inspections and permits to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Yellowstone expects to start reopening roads in the coming weeks. For now, only the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, remains open. Visitors are encouraged to check the park’s official website for the latest updates before planning their trip.
While seeing Old Faithful in person is an unforgettable experience, the live stream provides a great alternative for now. Stay updated, stay safe, and enjoy Yellowstone’s wonders—whether online or in person later this spring!
