Mackinac Island has done it again. Voted the No. 1 Summer Travel Destination for 2024 by USA Today, this tiny island in Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac is gearing up for another busy season. Nestled near the iconic Mackinac Bridge, the island draws over a million visitors each summer—despite having only about 600 full-time residents.
Winter is finally fading, and Mackinac Island is waking up. Most attractions, including the famous Grand Hotel, shut down during the cold months. Even the island’s beloved carriage horses are moved to the mainland. But now, as summer approaches, the island is coming back to life.
The 2025 season kicks off in late April. Many shops, arcades, and spas will open around April 25. The Grand Hotel, a crown jewel of the island, will have a soft opening the same day, with full operations starting May 2. This year marks the hotel’s 139th season, featuring newly restored spaces like the parlor and main dining room.
Visitors will find plenty of places to stay. The island has no chain hotels, offering instead a mix of charming inns, resorts, and bed-and-breakfasts. Over 1,600 rooms are available, though most businesses won’t fully open until May.
There’s no shortage of things to do. Shoppers can indulge in the island’s famous fudge—seven shops make about 10,000 pounds daily in summer. History buffs can explore landmarks from the fur trade era. Outdoor lovers can bike, hike, or take scenic carriage rides.
One of the biggest events is June’s Lilac Festival. The island’s car-free policy adds to its charm—visitors get around by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage. More than 500 draft horses work on the island each season, returning in late March after wintering near Pickford, Michigan.
Getting to Mackinac Island is easy. Ferries from Shepler’s and Arnold Transit Co. run from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. With no cars allowed, the boat ride is the only way in—and the first glimpse of the island’s timeless appeal.
The island’s popularity boosts Michigan’s tourism industry. Its mix of history, natural beauty, and unique experiences keeps travelers coming back. As summer approaches, Mackinac Island proves once again why it remains a must-visit destination.
