Uganda is setting big goals for its tourism industry. The country wants to earn $5.2 billion from tourism by 2028. To hit this target, it plans to welcome 3.5 million visitors every year. Right now, about 1.5 million tourists visit Uganda annually. This means the country must nearly double its tourist numbers in just three years.
To make this happen, Uganda is taking bold steps. One key effort is the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (Poate). The event first took place in 2024 and will return this year from May 21 to 24. Around 70 international buyers and over 5,000 trade visitors are expected to attend. The expo aims to put Uganda on the map as a top travel destination.
The government is also organizing familiarization trips (FAMs). These trips give travel experts a chance to see Uganda’s stunning landscapes and attractions firsthand. By experiencing the country themselves, they can better promote it to travelers worldwide.
Another strategy is the Tell Your Story campaign. This initiative encourages Ugandans to share their travel experiences on social media. Locals can highlight hidden gems, wildlife, and cultural sites. The goal is to spark interest in both domestic and international tourists.
Beyond marketing, Uganda is looking for investors. Many leases in national parks are about to expire. The government wants new investors to help develop these parks. Tourism currently makes up 3.6% of Uganda’s GDP. The country hopes to grow that number tenfold in the coming years.
With these efforts, Uganda is betting big on tourism. If successful, it could become one of Africa’s top travel destinations.
