This summer, Italy is boosting sustainable tourism with a new ferry service connecting Trieste to stunning coastal destinations in Croatia and Slovenia. Starting June 26, travelers can enjoy a convenient, eco-friendly way to explore the Adriatic coast without the hassle of crowded roads.
The ferry will run daily (except Tuesdays) until September 1, stopping in Piran (Slovenia), Poreč, Rovinj, and Mali Lošinj (Croatia). Each vessel can carry over 180 passengers and has space for at least 10 bicycles, making it ideal for green travel.
After a failed public tender in December 2024, the regional government struck a deal with Liberty Lines, the previous operator, to revive the route. The three-year contract, worth €4.5 million, ensures summer ferry services from 2025 to 2027, with an option to extend through 2028.
Cristina Amirante, Friuli Venezia Giulia’s infrastructure chief, said the project aligns with the region’s push for sustainable transport. The routes include:
- Trieste–Piran–Pore–Rovinj (round trip)
- Trieste–Rovinj–Mali Lošinj (round trip)
- Trieste–Poreč–Piran–Trieste
- Trieste–Piran–Rovinj–Trieste
Ferries depart from Pier IV in Trieste, a city often overlooked by tourists despite its rich history. Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste blends Italian and Central European culture. Visitors can explore ancient Roman ruins, hike to Castle of Saint Giusto for breathtaking views, or relax in Piazza Unita d’Italia, Europe’s largest seaside square.
Trieste is also famous for coffee—its port supplies beans across Europe. With double Italy’s average coffee consumption, the city’s cafes serve exclusive blends, a legacy of its 18th-century trade roots.
This ferry revival echoes a historic route first launched in 1963, which connected Trieste to Istrian towns until the 1990s. Now, travelers can once again sail the Adriatic sustainably, avoiding summer traffic while soaking in coastal beauty.
