Himachal Pradesh is taking big steps to attract more tourists. The state is upgrading Kangra Airport, promoting Kangra tea tourism, and developing scenic spots near Pong Dam.
The Kangra Airport expansion will stretch its runway from 1,376 meters to 3,010 meters. This will allow bigger planes to land, bringing in more visitors. Better air connectivity is expected to boost tourism in the region.
Kangra’s famous tea gardens are also getting attention. In 2023, the European Commission gave Kangra tea a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) tag. This recognizes its unique quality and origin. Experts say this could make Kangra a top spot for tea tourism, where travelers can explore plantations and learn about tea-making.
Meanwhile, the government is developing new tourist hubs near Pong Dam. Key areas like Nagrota Surian, Khabbal, Dehra, Kaza, Rakchham, and Chitkul will be turned into attractions. The Chief Minister confirmed that plans for Nagrota Surian, Khabbal, and the Dehra Wellness Centre have been sent to the Union Ministry of Tourism for approval. The goal is to spread tourism beyond popular spots and support sustainable growth.
With these efforts, Himachal Pradesh aims to offer more diverse travel experiences—from airport convenience and tea trails to lakeside getaways.
