Virgin Australia Reveals Interior of New Embraer 190-E2 Jets

by Alice

Virgin Australia has unveiled the interior design of its much-anticipated Embraer 190-E2 narrowbody jets, marking a significant step for Western Australia’s charter market. The new aircraft will feature a dual-class layout, offering both Business and Economy Class for the first time in the region’s charter services.

The unveiling comes as Embraer begins assembling the first of these aircraft, named Coral Bay, this month. Virgin Australia plans to receive four of the eight new jets within the next 12 months for its regional division, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA).

Nathan Miller, Executive General Manager of VARA, expressed excitement about the aircraft’s upcoming debut, scheduled for October 2025.

“We chose a dual-class layout for flexibility,” Miller explained. “It allows us to offer three product options, including our extra legroom service, Economy X. This configuration enables us to use the aircraft for both commercial flights and charter services, depending on demand.”

Miller highlighted the positive reception from customers, particularly for the new two-plus-two seating arrangement in the Economy Class cabin, which eliminates middle seats. He also emphasized the added space for personal belongings, with every guest guaranteed overhead bin space. Compared to the previous Fokker 100 aircraft, the new seats are more spacious, enhancing the overall travel experience.

All of the new jets will be equipped with Virgin Australia’s high-speed Wi-Fi, in-flight entertainment via passengers’ own devices, and in-seat power outlets.

In terms of sustainability, Miller noted the Embraer 190-E2’s impressive credentials, including its low noise emissions and fuel efficiency. “The lower noise profile is particularly important for communities near the airport, especially for early morning departures,” he said. “The E2 is the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its segment, with emissions reduced by up to 30% compared to the outgoing Fokker 100s.”

Miller added that training for the new aircraft is already underway, with maintenance training in Perth and pilot training set to begin soon at Embraer’s facility in Singapore. The airline has also started recruiting for new pilot and support roles.

As for scheduling, Miller shared that the first E2 aircraft will mainly serve current charter routes and regional commercial airports within Western Australia. However, he hinted at future growth opportunities as the fleet expands.

Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer of Embraer Commercial Aviation, also commented on the new aircraft’s impact. “The Embraer 190-E2 will significantly enhance Virgin Australia’s services in Western Australia,” he said, adding that the two companies are working closely to ensure a smooth launch.

In addition to the new aircraft, VARA is preparing to open a $35 million maintenance hangar at Perth Airport in the coming months. This facility will serve as the base for the airline’s engineering team, further supporting its expanded fleet.
