São Paulo is making big moves to attract Muslim tourists. The state’s tourism department is working hard to become a top destination for Muslim travelers. Their key tool? The Halal Tourism Guide, created with help from the Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil (FAMBRAS).
Launched a year and a half ago, the guide helps Muslim visitors—both from Brazil and abroad—feel welcome. It lists prayer spaces, halal-friendly hotels, and fun attractions that respect Islamic traditions.
What’s in the Guide?
The guide highlights important Islamic sites, like the famous Brazil Mosque in São Paulo and the Islamic Center of Jundiaí. But it’s not just about religion—it also suggests top tourist spots. Visitors can explore Ibirapuera Park, the historic village of Paranapiacaba, or hike the Seven Beaches Trail in Ubatuba.
For Muslim travelers, finding the right food and lodging is key. The guide includes hotels that offer prayer rugs, Quran copies, and signs pointing to Mecca. Restaurants are also adapting, with more offering halal-certified meals. Some are still making changes, but all are committed to being more inclusive.
Training for a Welcoming Experience
São Paulo isn’t stopping at just a guide. The state has teamed up with FAMBRAS’s Halal Academy to train hotel staff and tourism workers. Over 1,000 people have learned how to make Muslim guests feel at home. The training covers cultural sensitivity, avoiding stereotypes, and better hospitality.
The tourism department has also promoted halal tourism at 60+ fairs and events. While there’s no set target for Muslim visitors, interest is growing fast. Officials say they’ll keep expanding these efforts.
What’s Next?
São Paulo wants to be a model for inclusive tourism. Future plans include guides for other faiths, like Jewish, Catholic, and African heritage travelers. The goal? To make every tourist—no matter their background—feel respected and welcome.
By focusing on cultural understanding, São Paulo is positioning itself as a must-visit for Muslim travelers—and setting an example for the world.
