Hawaii’s tourism industry is facing growing concerns as Canadians cancel vacations to the islands. The trend is linked to rising tensions between Canada and the U.S., driven by the policies of the new presidential administration.
Tourism officials warn that the cancellations could hurt Hawaii’s economy. Many Canadians are choosing not to travel to the U.S., including Hawaii, due to political disagreements.
A recent report from Hawaii News Now highlighted the issue. One Canadian couple at Kahului Airport said they faced criticism from friends back home for not canceling their Maui trip.
Political Tensions Fuel Travel Cuts
The strained relationship stems from President Trump’s policies, such as new tariffs on Canada and remarks suggesting Canada should join the U.S. as the 51st state. These moves have sparked anger in Canada, leading to calls for citizens to avoid U.S. travel.
A “Buy Canada” movement is gaining steam, with politicians urging Canadians to spend their money domestically instead of in the U.S. This shift has hit Hawaii hard, as Canadians make up a key part of its tourism market.
Tourism Numbers at Risk
In January, about 54,000 Canadians visited Hawaii. But with cancellations rising, experts worry about a drop in future bookings. The Hawaii Tourism Authority is closely watching the situation as the spring travel season approaches.
The Governor’s office has received emails from Canadians canceling trips. In response, officials emphasized Hawaii’s long-standing friendship with Canada.
“Governor Green and the people of Hawaii deeply value our strong ties with Canada,” the office said in a statement.
A recent report by Tourism Economics warned that global trade disputes could harm U.S. tourism. For Hawaii, the loss of Canadian visitors could mean a major economic blow.
