Starting May 1, 2025, the Province of Salzburg in Austria will introduce a groundbreaking initiative offering free public transport to all tourists. The “Guest Mobility Ticket” aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and make the region’s transportation more accessible, all while enhancing the visitor experience.
This move is expected to significantly impact Austria’s tourism infrastructure and set a new standard for eco-friendly travel across Europe.
Free Unlimited Transport Access for Tourists
Tourists staying at any accommodation in Salzburg will receive a free mobility pass. This pass, available digitally or on paper, will grant unlimited access to the entire regional transport network.
It covers:
- City and regional buses
- S-Bahn and regional trains
- Long-distance trains within Salzburg
- Salzburg Verkehr shuttles
This ticket will be valid throughout the visitor’s stay, allowing them to explore the region’s cultural landmarks, natural attractions, ski resorts, and more without the need for rental cars or complex ticket systems.
Funding the Program: A Balance Between Affordability and Sustainability
The program will be funded through a mobility fee added to the region’s existing overnight accommodation tax. This fee, currently set at €0.50 per night for visitors aged 15 and older, will increase to €1.10 per night starting May 1, 2027. This model ensures that the program remains affordable for tourists while providing the necessary funds to maintain the service.
Benefits for the Environment and Tourism
The initiative is designed to reduce Salzburg’s reliance on cars, helping to ease traffic congestion and cut greenhouse gas emissions. With free, convenient transport, visitors will be encouraged to leave their cars behind, reducing pressure on roads and small towns, especially during peak tourist seasons.
From a tourism perspective, the program makes travel more affordable for families, backpackers, and eco-conscious tourists, positioning Salzburg as a more attractive destination. It also provides easier access to UNESCO heritage sites, music festivals, and the Austrian Alps, supporting the region’s goal of carbon-neutral tourism.
Streamlined and Digital Accessibility
The digital-first approach of the Guest Mobility Ticket reflects Austria’s push to modernize its travel infrastructure. By distributing passes electronically, local hotels can reduce paper waste, and the check-in process will be faster and more efficient. The digital system also allows for better data accuracy and visitor tracking, which will help improve future mobility planning and tourism policies.
A Model for the Future of European Travel
Salzburg’s commitment to sustainable tourism could serve as a model for other European regions. As climate-conscious travel becomes a major concern, the province’s focus on green mobility positions it as a leader in environmentally-friendly tourism within Europe. Tourism boards, transport authorities, and local governments in other destinations like Innsbruck, Vienna, and neighboring countries such as Germany and Switzerland are likely to watch Salzburg’s initiative closely as they explore ways to manage tourist volumes while maintaining ecological sustainability.
