Avelo Airlines Cuts Three Routes, Including One Before It Even Launched

by Alice

Avelo Airlines is cutting three routes from its schedule, including one that never even took off. The Houston-based airline announced on Thursday that it will cease operations on April 28, canceling flights that failed to generate enough demand. The affected routes include two that launched last fall and one that was set to start soon.

The first canceled route is the nonstop flight between Hartford’s Bradley International Airport (BDL) and Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB). This service, which began on November 8, 2024, operated for only a few months. The second cut involves flights from Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) in Central Florida to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) in New Hampshire, which started in late October 2024. Lastly, Avelo is halting the planned route from Hartford’s BDL to Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA) in North Carolina, which was scheduled to begin in early April.

Avelo explained the decision to cancel these routes to The Points Guy, stating that low demand led to the cancellations. The airline’s spokesperson said, “These routes generated low demand, and we can better utilize our aircraft with new routes or more frequent services in other markets.” This is a typical move for budget airlines, which frequently adjust their schedules based on customer demand.

The cancellation of the Hartford-to-Daytona Beach route wasn’t entirely unexpected, especially after Avelo had already reduced other flights from Hartford. Last month, the airline reevaluated its strategy in Connecticut, where it has a strong presence at Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN). A spokesperson confirmed that Avelo will now focus more on domestic flights from New Haven and shift its Hartford operations toward international routes.

Despite these route cuts, Avelo continues to grow. The airline recently announced the addition of 13 new routes, including 10 from North Carolina. On March 6, Avelo opened a new base at Concord-Padgett Regional Airport and will open another at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) on April 3, further expanding its presence in the state.
