Fremantle, also known as Walyalup, in Western Australia has been selected as the host city for the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in 2026. The announcement was made during the 2025 awards ceremony, held on Friday night in Adelaide.
The awards, presented by the Australian Tourism Industry Council, are the highest recognition in Australia’s tourism sector. They celebrate the achievements of individuals and businesses across more than 25 categories, ranging from major tourist attractions to cultural experiences, accommodation, and dining. Winners and finalists from each state and territory compete for these prestigious honors.
Fremantle secured the rights to host the event after a joint bid by Tourism Western Australia and Business Events Perth. The Rottnest Island Authority and the City of Fremantle also provided support.
The Australian Tourism Awards attract hundreds of delegates and a high-profile guest list each year, including tourism ministers, leaders of marketing bodies, and heads of national tourism associations.
The awards’ gala ceremony will take place in Fremantle, a city known for its rich history and vibrant cultural scene. The Talking Tourism Business Forum will be held on Rottnest Island/Wadjemup, famous for its beautiful beaches and the iconic quokka.
Anneke Brown, Managing Director of Tourism WA, said hosting the awards will help boost business visits and raise the profile of Western Australia to a national audience. It will also generate media attention and showcase the state’s top tourism operators.
“Hosting this event is an excellent opportunity for Western Australia. It will allow us to show the wonders of our state and highlight our incredible operators to industry professionals from across the country,” Brown said.
Gareth Martin, CEO of Business Events Perth, highlighted that securing the Australian Tourism Awards and the Talking Tourism Business Forum is a strong indication of Western Australia’s reputation as a leading destination for business events.
“Bringing this prestigious national event to Western Australia is a major achievement. It will provide a platform to showcase the state’s excellence in tourism and foster collaboration within the industry,” Martin said.
Jason Banks, Executive Director of the Rottnest Island Authority, noted that the Talking Tourism Business Forum will give attendees the chance to explore the best of Western Australia.
“We are thrilled to host the Business Forum at Rottnest Island in 2026. Delegates will experience the island’s cultural history and natural beauty while working with Australia’s top tourism operators,” Banks said.
Fremantle’s Mayor, Hannah Fitzhardinge, expressed excitement about welcoming the best in the tourism industry to the city in 2026.
“We can’t wait for the tourism industry’s leaders to experience all that Fremantle has to offer. From boutique shops and hidden bars to vibrant street art, Fremantle is a must-visit destination where history, culture, and coastal beauty blend seamlessly,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.
