Hong Kong Airlines is taking bold steps to improve air travel safety by updating its policies on portable chargers. The move comes as concerns grow over the risks linked to lithium battery-powered devices, such as overheating or catching fire. With more travelers relying on power banks during long trips, the airline is joining others worldwide in tightening rules to protect passengers.
Recent incidents have highlighted the dangers. For example, a Hong Kong Airlines flight narrowly avoided disaster when a power bank caught fire in an overhead compartment shortly after takeoff. Quick-thinking passengers and crew used water and juice to put out the flames, preventing a potential tragedy.
Similar events have pushed airlines to act. Starting April 1, 2025, one major carrier will ban portable chargers entirely on flights. This decision followed a fire caused by a power bank on a flight from Busan to Hong Kong. Airlines in South Korea and Taiwan have also introduced bans on power banks and spare lithium batteries.
In another incident, a Hong Kong Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing after a power bank ignited in the overhead compartment. Although the fire caused significant damage, the plane landed safely, and no one was hurt, thanks to the crew’s quick response.
To address these risks, airlines are also focusing on educating travelers. Passengers are urged to check airline policies, use certified power banks, and keep them in carry-on bags for easy monitoring. This effort aims to reduce risks and ensure safer flights for everyone.
