Cairns Airport Upgrades International Terminal as Passenger Numbers Soar

by gongshang07

Cairns Airport is gearing up for a busy year as it unveils upgrades to its international terminal. These improvements come as passenger numbers hit their highest level in nearly 20 years.

This week, the airport launched one of its two new, larger baggage belts. The new system provides more space for arriving luggage, helping passengers collect their bags faster. Additionally, travelers can now enjoy a newly opened Escape Lounge, operated by Escape Lounges. The lounge offers premium facilities, including complimentary dining, in a stylish and comfortable setting.

These upgrades are part of a $55 million overhaul of the terminal. They come at a perfect time, as international passenger numbers are expected to reach 760,000 this financial year—a level not seen since 2008.

Richard Barker, CEO of Cairns Airport, said, “We’re just weeks away from launching two new international routes: Jetstar’s direct flights from Christchurch and Fiji Airways’ services to Nadi. These year-round flights will add 125,000 seats to the market annually.”

He added, “We’re also entering the busy Easter school holiday period, with Air New Zealand’s seasonal service from Auckland starting soon. With Easter close to the Anzac Day long weekend, we expect many visitors to extend their stay in Tropical North Queensland during April and May.”

The airport is also preparing to host several major international conferences in the coming months, bringing thousands of business travelers to the region. Barker noted, “The new Escape Lounge will be a great addition for these visitors, as well as holidaymakers and locals who want to relax before their flights.”

The Escape Lounge is open to all travelers, regardless of airline or ticket class. Passengers can either pre-book access or pay at the door.

Barker also addressed baggage handling improvements, saying, “We know waiting for luggage after a long flight can be frustrating. That’s why we’re installing two new baggage reclaim belts. Each belt will double the number of items that can be processed, making the experience smoother for passengers.”

While construction continues, travelers may notice temporary changes in the departures lounge. Barker thanked passengers for their patience, saying, “We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we transform the terminal.”

The upgrade is set to be completed by the end of 2025. The final phase includes installing the second baggage belt, refurbishing the departures area with new flooring and seating, remodeling bathrooms, and enhancing dining and retail options.

Last year, the first stage of the project was completed. It included new flooring, escalators, elevators, check-in counters, and four glass airbridges in the check-in and arrivals areas.
