With the Easter holidays approaching, ABTA – The Travel Association is urging travelers to Europe to ensure their passports meet the necessary validity requirements. This reminder comes as some British passport holders continue to face issues due to rule changes implemented over four years ago.
Travelers with invalid passports risk being denied boarding, leading to disrupted plans and financial losses. ABTA has reported cases of passengers being turned away at airports for failing to comply with the rules.
Key Passport Rules for European Travel
British passport holders visiting the Schengen Area – which includes most EU countries (excluding Ireland), as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City – must meet two critical validity requirements:
Issue Date: The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date of entry into the destination country.
Expiry Date: The passport must be valid for at least three months after the planned departure date from the destination.
Travelers are advised to check both the issue and expiry dates of their passports to ensure compliance.
ABTA’s Four-Step Guide to Passport Validity
To avoid last-minute issues, ABTA recommends the following steps:
Check Country-Specific Rules: Visit the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice page for the destination country’s passport requirements.
Verify Issue Date: Ensure the passport was issued within the last 10 years from the date of entry.
Confirm Expiry Date: Check that the passport has at least three months of validity remaining after the return date.
Renew Online if Needed: Apply for a passport renewal through Gov.UK for the most cost-effective option.
Expert Advice from ABTA

“Following our four-step guide ensures your passport is valid and prevents travel disruptions. This is especially crucial if your passport is nearing expiration.
