Cairns Airport Unveils Upgrades to International Terminal Amid Record Passenger Numbers

by Alice

Cairns Airport has unveiled major upgrades to its international terminal as passenger numbers hit their highest level in nearly two decades. The improvements come as the airport prepares to welcome new international routes and a surge in travelers during the upcoming Easter holiday season.

This week, the airport activated one of its two new, larger baggage belts in the international terminal. The upgraded system provides more space for arriving luggage, allowing passengers to collect their bags more efficiently. Additionally, travelers can now enjoy a newly opened airport lounge, operated by Escape Lounges. The lounge offers premium facilities, complimentary dining, and a comfortable space to relax before flights.

The upgrades coincide with a significant rise in international passenger numbers, which are expected to reach 760,000 this financial year—a level not seen since 2008.

Richard Barker, Cairns Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, said the enhancements are part of a $55 million overhaul and come at a perfect time. “We’re just weeks away from launching two new international routes: Jetstar’s direct flights from Christchurch and Fiji Airways’ services to Nadi,” Barker said. “These year-round routes will add 125,000 seats annually, boosting connectivity and tourism.”

Barker also highlighted the upcoming Easter school holidays and Air New Zealand’s seasonal service from Auckland as key drivers of increased traffic. “With Easter falling close to the Anzac Day long weekend, we expect many visitors to extend their stay in Tropical North Queensland during April and May,” he added.

The airport is also preparing to host several major international conferences in the coming months, attracting thousands of business travelers. Barker noted that the new Escape Lounge will cater to these visitors, as well as holidaymakers and locals looking for a relaxing pre-flight experience. The lounge is accessible to all travelers, regardless of airline or ticket class, with both pre-booking and walk-in options available.

Barker emphasized the importance of improving the passenger experience, particularly when it comes to baggage collection. “We understand how frustrating it can be to wait for luggage after a long flight,” he said. “That’s why we’ve installed two new baggage reclaim belts, each doubling the capacity for luggage flow. Having the first belt operational is a significant step, especially as visitor numbers continue to grow.”

While the upgrades are underway, passengers may notice temporary changes in the departures lounge. Barker thanked travelers for their patience as the terminal undergoes its transformation.

The $55 million upgrade is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. The final phase will include the installation of the second baggage belt, refurbished departures areas with new flooring and seating, remodeled bathrooms, and enhanced dining and retail options.

Last year, the airport completed the first stage of the project, which included upgrades to the check-in and arrivals areas, new escalators and elevators, modernized check-in and car rental counters, and the installation of four glass airbridges.

With these improvements, Cairns Airport is well-positioned to handle growing passenger numbers and provide a seamless travel experience for both international and domestic visitors.
