Austrian rail operator ÖBB has become the second intermodal partner to join the Star Alliance, a global airline partnership network. This collaboration will enable ÖBB customers and Star Alliance passengers, including those flying with Austrian Airlines, to seamlessly combine international flights with train travel across Austria.
The partnership currently focuses on high-speed Railjet services connecting Vienna International Airport to key Austrian cities such as Graz, Linz, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. Vienna Airport serves as a hub for 16 Star Alliance member airlines, making the integration of rail and air travel more convenient for passengers.
This initiative builds on the existing partnership between ÖBB and Austrian Airlines, which already offers integrated ticketing and check-in services. Travelers will now benefit from a single combined ticket for their journey and can earn airline loyalty points when traveling by train.
ÖBB follows German rail operator Deutsche Bahn, which became Star Alliance’s first non-airline partner in 2022.
Theo Panagiotoulias, CEO of Star Alliance, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “Air and rail have complemented each other as transport modes for several years around the world. We are proud to welcome ÖBB to the Star Alliance family. This partnership will not only offer more choice but also enhance the seamlessness of customer journeys.”
Andreas Matthä, CEO of ÖBB, emphasized the environmental and practical benefits of the collaboration. “This initiative allows us to offer passengers an eco-friendly, car-free way to travel to and from Vienna Airport, making the overall journey more comfortable. Train travel will now become a more flexible and seamless part of air travel, connecting not just with one airline group but across a global network of 25 airlines.”
The partnership marks a significant step in promoting sustainable and integrated travel options for passengers worldwide.
