AirAsia Philippines has announced new rules for carrying and using power banks on flights, following updated safety guidelines from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). The move aims to address potential risks linked to lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in power banks and other portable electronic devices.
Key Changes to Power Bank Policy
Under the new policy, passengers are no longer allowed to use power banks during flights.
However, they can still carry up to two power banks, as long as:
- Each power bank does not exceed 100 watt-hours (Wh).
- Power banks must be stored in personal belongings placed under the seat or in seat pockets.
- Storing power banks in overhead compartments is strictly prohibited.
These rules are designed to reduce the risk of fire hazards caused by lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat or malfunction under certain conditions. The updated policy aligns with international aviation safety standards.
Safety as Top Priority
First Officer Steve Dailisan, Head of Communications and Public Affairs at AirAsia Philippines, stressed that passenger safety remains the airline’s primary concern.
“We understand that power banks are essential for many travelers, but safety must come first,” Dailisan said. “We encourage passengers to charge their devices before boarding and to follow the guidelines set by our ground and inflight crew.”
Passengers will be reminded of the policy before boarding. If a passenger is found using a power bank during the flight, they will receive a warning. Repeated violations may result in the device being confiscated and returned only after the flight lands.
Commitment to Safe Travel
By implementing CAAP’s updated regulations, AirAsia Philippines reaffirms its dedication to ensuring passenger safety and adhering to global aviation standards. The airline aims to provide a secure and comfortable travel experience for all its guests.
Passengers are advised to review the updated policy and prepare accordingly to avoid any inconvenience during their journey.
