Japan is taking bold steps to manage its growing tourism industry. The country plans to introduce an electronic travel authorization (ETA) system sooner than expected. This move is part of a broader strategy to handle the increasing number of visitors while protecting popular destinations from overcrowding.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba recently announced plans to fast-track the implementation of Japan’s ETA system, similar to the U.S. ESTA and the UK’s ETA. The goal is to streamline immigration processes and improve border security. This system will require travelers from 71 visa-exempt countries to apply online before entering Japan. Authorities will verify their details in advance, reducing wait times at airports and helping manage tourist flows more effectively.
Japan welcomed over 25 million international tourists in 2023. This number is expected to jump to nearly 37 million in 2024. By 2030, the country aims to attract 60 million visitors annually, boosting the economy by an estimated 15 trillion yen. However, this rapid growth has led to challenges, including overcrowding at iconic sites like Mount Fuji and Kyoto.
Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been particularly affected. During the summer, thousands of hikers flock to its trails, straining infrastructure and harming the environment. To address this, the government has doubled the climbing fee for the Yoshida trail from 2,000 to 4,000 yen (about $27) from July to September. The extra funds will support trail maintenance, garbage collection, and measures to limit visitor numbers. Similar fees may be introduced on other trails in the future.
In Kyoto, known for its cultural heritage, officials are considering higher tourist taxes. The aim is to preserve historical sites and reduce the impact of mass tourism.
Japan’s new ETA system is a key part of its strategy to balance tourism growth with sustainability. By using technology to manage visitor numbers, the country hopes to protect its natural and cultural treasures while enhancing the travel experience. This approach could serve as a model for other destinations facing similar challenges.
