A strong storm system hit the Charlotte, South Carolina area early Sunday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. The severe weather caused major disruptions for air travelers.
At Charlotte Douglas International Airport, flight operations were severely impacted. Flight tracking service FlightAware reported that by 5:30 p.m. ET, 540 flights had been delayed, and 83 were canceled.
Though the worst of the storm was expected to pass later in the day, delays were expected to continue due to ongoing storms affecting other airports in the Southeastern U.S.
The weather chaos left many passengers stranded for hours as they waited for available flights to continue their travel. WCNC Charlotte reporter Julie Kay spoke with several travelers who were frustrated by the disruptions.
One passenger shared that their travel plans had been interrupted at multiple airports, while another, heading to Fort Lauderdale, said they expected a 12-hour wait at Charlotte Douglas before being able to continue their journey.
An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed that the delays and cancellations were due to the severe weather. “We are working as quickly and safely as possible to get our customers moving,” they told WCNC.
