by Alice

American Express has identified four major travel trends for 2025, based on their 2025 Global Travel Trends Report. The report, which surveyed over 8,000 travelers worldwide with annual incomes of $50,000 or more, highlights what travelers are prioritizing this year.

Audrey Hendley, President of American Express Travel, explained, “Travelers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are looking for thoughtful and meaningful trips this year. The report shows that people are passionate about their vacations, and we can use our expertise to help create the perfect itineraries as demand continues to grow.”

1. Seeking Memorable Souvenirs

Rather than opting for typical souvenirs, travelers are now looking for unique, functional items with cultural or personal significance. According to the report, 82% of young travelers search for one-of-a-kind goods. Many travelers also favor designer items, high-end beauty products, and homeware or decor, with 58%, 46%, and 43% of travelers buying these items, respectively.

A significant 73% of travelers prefer to shop at small businesses while on vacation, supporting local economies.

2. Rise of Multi-Generational Family Trips

Multi-generational travel is becoming increasingly popular. The report shows that 89% of Millennial and Gen Z parents seek more quality time with extended family during their trips. In fact, 72% are even willing to pull their children out of school to travel.

Empty-nesters are also traveling more, with 67% of them saying they take more trips now that their children have grown.

3. Loyalty and Credit Card Rewards

Travelers are maximizing loyalty programs and credit card rewards like never before. Seventy-five percent of younger travelers and 62% of older travelers feel satisfied when using credit card points to book travel. Many are also getting creative, with 58% stacking benefits from different programs for upgrades, and 66% combining credit card rewards with loyalty perks for international travel. Half of all travelers plan to use travel points this year.

4. Embracing Travel Technology

New travel technology is helping travelers plan and enjoy their trips. The report reveals that 83% of younger travelers and 64% of older travelers use some form of Gen AI technology when booking travel. Younger travelers, in particular, use AI for recommendations on things to do at their destination, budgeting tips, and translation services abroad.

Social media and travel planning apps are also gaining popularity, with 80% of younger travelers noting their convenience when planning trips.

As travel continues to evolve, these trends suggest that travelers are looking for more personalized, meaningful experiences while maximizing technology and rewards to enhance their journeys.
