Bahrain Introduces Digital Travel Features in National ID Cards

by Alice

Bahrain has taken a significant step in digital innovation by integrating Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology into its national ID cards. This upgrade allows the cards to function as digital travel credentials, simplifying cross-border travel for citizens.

The new ID card, equipped with a “travel application-ready chip,” was unveiled during a press conference hosted by the Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA). Bahrain is now the first Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country to achieve this milestone.

Developed by Thales, the next-generation smart ID card meets the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for secure travel documentation. It includes advanced features such as biometric data, enhanced storage capacity, and improved security measures. These upgrades aim to streamline the travel experience for Bahraini citizens and enable seamless cross-border identification in countries that accept digital travel credentials.

Citizens have been advised to continue using their current ID cards until they expire, after which they can obtain the new version.

This initiative is part of Bahrain’s broader efforts to advance digital transformation under the Ministry of Interior. In late February, Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa launched three key digital projects: a digital government service center, a digital innovation lab focused on AI and creativity, and a new national ID card service center.

Minister Al Khalifa emphasized that these projects reflect Bahrain’s commitment to improving citizens’ lives and positioning the country as a regional leader in digital transformation. He also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs to collaborate with other nations to ensure the new ID card is recognized as a valid travel document.

The initiative aligns with Bahrain’s 2023-2026 national digital transformation strategy, which aims to modernize the country and make digital solutions a cornerstone of both government and private sector operations.

According to iGA CEO Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, the card’s design incorporates elements of Bahrain’s cultural heritage and history. It is also designed to be durable and highly secure.

In a related development, Bahrain recently launched eKey 2.0, an upgraded version of its single sign-on authentication platform. This tool provides secure access to digital public services, further supporting the country’s digital transformation goals.

Bahrain’s latest advancements underscore its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance citizen services and strengthen its position as a regional digital innovation hub.
