The Canadian Digital Service has successfully tested a new seamless travel solution that uses facial recognition technology. Developed by Ottawa-based Face4 Systems in partnership with Entrust, the solution aims to improve travel efficiency by allowing passengers to use their face as their digital identity.

Travelers can create a secure, verifiable digital identity on their mobile phone using a biometric passport with a chip. This digital identity, which complies with W3C standards, is then used at key travel points such as border control, security checks, and flight boarding. At these points, the traveler’s facial data and other metadata are processed through a cloud-based facial recognition service, allowing them to proceed with just their face as a form of verification.

This system is similar to IATA’s One ID, which recently completed a successful trial in Asia that reduced passenger processing times by 40%. Last year, a successful trial of Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) was also conducted on flights between Europe and Canada.

The Face4-Entrust project is funded by Innovative Solutions Canada, a program within the Department of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development (ISED) Canada. However, details about the locations of the test were not disclosed.

The solution was designed to meet the standards of the Pan-Canadian Trust Framework (PCTF) and aims to enhance both border security and operational efficiency.

“We are thrilled to have our Seamless Travel solution selected and tested by the Canadian Digital Service, with support from Shared Services Canada. This collaboration with Entrust blends facial recognition and secure digital credentials, helping to shape the future of travel in Canada and beyond,” said Ilan Arnon, CEO of Face4 Systems.

Previously, Face4 and Entrust took part in a small-scale trial with the Canada Border Services Agency in 2022, testing identity verification for flight crews in Toronto.
