Viking Ocean Cruises is expanding its winter sailings in the Mediterranean, a move that aligns with a growing trend in the travel industry. More travelers are choosing to visit regions typically explored in the spring through fall during the winter months, attracted by lower prices and quieter destinations.
River cruise lines have long offered Christmas market cruises in Europe during the colder months, but now, ocean cruise lines are joining in by offering Mediterranean cruises during the winter season. This shift is fueled by the cruise industry’s growing fleet, which is seeking to explore off-season destinations. Travelers are also drawn to the opportunity for less crowded ports and better deals.
A Trend That Started Nearly a Decade Ago
Viking first introduced its “Off-Season” Mediterranean sailings nearly 10 years ago. Since then, the company has made these cruises a staple of its offerings. Richard Marnell, Viking’s Executive Vice President of Marketing, explained, “When our first ocean ship, Viking Star, debuted in 2015, we were proud to offer ‘Off-Season’ Mediterranean sailings that same year. Since then, these cruises have become a key part of our offerings, with a variety of dates and itineraries available.”
Plans for 2025 and Beyond
For the 2025 season, Viking will have two of its 930-passenger ships operating full-time in the Mediterranean during the winter months. Additionally, two more ships will offer select itineraries.
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, Viking plans to increase its presence even further. Marnell confirmed, “We will deploy five ocean-going ships in the Mediterranean during the ‘off-season’ period, along with an additional ship on select itineraries.”
Great Value for Travelers
Viking’s off-season Mediterranean sailings are especially popular due to their all-inclusive rates, which, combined with off-season airfare and hotel deals, offer great value for guests. This growing trend offers an attractive option for those looking to experience the Mediterranean in a quieter, more affordable way.
