Hong Kong Customs has arrested two people in connection with a travel agency accused of misleading customers about air ticket bookings. A male director and a female employee were detained on Thursday for allegedly violating the Trade Descriptions Ordinance by using false trade descriptions.
The arrests followed complaints from customers who claimed they were told their tickets were sold out after booking them through the agency. One of the agency’s employees advised customers to buy tickets directly and promised that the agency would provide compensation. However, the customers were unable to recover their money, totaling around HK$250,000 in losses.
After receiving the complaints, Customs officers launched an investigation and arrested the 75-year-old male director and the 62-year-old female employee. Both suspects are being questioned, and the investigation is ongoing.
A Customs spokesperson emphasized the importance of adhering to the Trade Descriptions Ordinance and urged consumers to purchase services only from trusted providers. Under the law, traders found guilty of falsely advertising their services could face penalties, including a fine of up to HK$500,000 and up to five years in prison.
