Fleet Upgrades and Changes

In line with its growth plans, Air India is set to complete the modernization of its narrowbody fleet by mid-2025. Additionally, the first of its older widebody Boeing 787 aircraft will undergo a retrofit, including new seats and entertainment systems. This process will start in April 2025 and the aircraft is expected to return to service in October 2025. Following that, two to three Boeing 787s will be upgraded every month until all 27 of the legacy aircraft are modernized.

The retrofit program for Air India’s Boeing 777 fleet, originally scheduled to begin in 2025, has been delayed until early 2026 due to production delays with the seat supplier. However, the airline plans to refresh other aspects of the Boeing 777’s interior in 2025, with the full retrofit expected to be completed by 2026.

Suspension of Some Routes

Due to the ongoing fleet upgrades, Air India will suspend its nonstop Mumbai-Melbourne route from 30 March to 13 September 2025. The nonstop Kochi-London Gatwick service will also be suspended from 30 March 2025 until further notice. Despite these suspensions, the airline will continue to operate 12 weekly flights to London Gatwick from Amritsar, Ahmedabad, and Goa.

This expansion and fleet modernization are part of Air India’s broader strategy to enhance its global operations and service quality in the coming years.
