A severe winter storm is wreaking havoc across the United States, disrupting travel in major cities like Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, and New York. Heavy snow, freezing rain, and sleet are battering the Northeast, while the South braces for severe weather, including damaging winds, hail, and potential tornadoes. The storm has caused significant flight delays and cancellations, leaving thousands of travelers stranded.
As of today, more than 900 flights have been delayed nationwide, with 147 cancellations reported. Major airports, including Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, Reagan National Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport, are experiencing significant disruptions. Chicago O’Hare alone has reported 237 delays and 38 cancellations, affecting both domestic and international flights.
Airlines are scrambling to manage the chaos as weather conditions worsen, forcing last-minute schedule changes. Travelers are being urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport and to avoid driving on hazardous roads.
More Storms on the Horizon
The travel disruptions are expected to continue as another winter storm is forecasted to hit the central and eastern U.S. over the weekend. The Interstate 90 corridor, stretching from Des Moines, Iowa, through Chicago and into New England, could see up to a foot of snow in some areas, including upstate New York and northern Massachusetts.
Meanwhile, the South and Southeast face a severe weather threat on Saturday, with the potential for damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes. Severe weather has already struck parts of the South, with a tornado touching down in Columbia, Mississippi, on Wednesday. Residents captured dramatic footage of the twister, which sent debris flying through the air.
California Braces for Flooding
While the East Coast deals with snow and ice, California is preparing for another atmospheric river storm. Heavy rain is expected to bring the risk of landslides and flash floods, particularly in burn-scarred areas. Officials in Santa Barbara County have issued evacuation warnings for communities at risk.
What Travelers Should Do
With continued disruptions likely, passengers are advised to:
- Check their flight status before heading to the airport.
- Allow extra time for travel and prepare for longer security lines.
- Consider rebooking or making alternate travel plans if flights are canceled.
- Monitor weather updates as another storm system approaches this weekend.
Airlines and airports are working to minimize cancellations and delays, but travelers should prepare for ongoing challenges in the days ahead. Stay safe and stay informed as the winter storm continues to impact the nation.
