The frequent tremors have had a direct impact on Santorini’s tourism industry, which is heavily reliant on visitors. A key cruise operator has already decided to avoid the island in the coming months, fearing the ongoing instability. Local tourism professionals are also worried that the earthquakes could deter travelers, leading to fewer bookings. Recent data shows a noticeable decline in reservations, and while some remain optimistic about a recovery, others are doubtful about the island’s prospects for the season.
Experts monitoring the situation admit that predicting when the tremors will stop is difficult. The uncertainty surrounding the duration and severity of the earthquakes has made both travelers and tourism operators anxious. As a result, some potential visitors may choose other destinations where conditions feel more stable.
Challenges for Local Workers and Businesses
Tourism has been the driving force behind Santorini’s economy for years. One local worker, Manos, a bartender who has worked on the island for five years, shared his worries about the downturn in tourism. While he was not particularly concerned about the earthquakes themselves, he feared that fewer visitors would mean fewer job opportunities. In a region where seasonal work is essential, Manos decided to accept a job offer in Corfu for the holiday season instead of returning to Santorini. He was concerned that a lack of tourists could leave him without enough income or even a job during the summer months.
The construction sector has also felt the strain. While Santorini typically sees a slowdown in building during the winter, the earthquakes have caused further delays in ongoing projects. Hotel owners have postponed construction plans due to the uncertainty about the number of visitors. This has left workers unsure about payment and the continuity of their work.
Pressure on Infrastructure and Government Response
Santorini’s challenges go beyond the economy. The island’s infrastructure, already under strain due to high tourism numbers, has been further tested by the seismic activity. During the peak season, around 70,000 workers and 160,000 visitors are on the island daily, putting a significant burden on the island’s resources.
A local hotel owner noted that while the government had responded quickly to the earthquakes by deploying emergency crews, there have long been calls for improvements to infrastructure, particularly the construction of a new port to handle the growing number of tourists. Proposals have been submitted to better support the island’s workforce and address potential future disruptions. Without proactive measures, local businesses and workers may struggle to stay afloat in what could be a difficult and unpredictable season.
As Santorini and other Greek islands grapple with the challenges posed by seismic activity and declining visitor numbers, both locals and the government will need to work together to ensure the island’s economic stability and long-term success.
