Hong Kong Airlines has announced a major expansion of its flight network with the introduction of a new daily direct service to Sydney, Australia, beginning on June 20, 2025. This move makes Hong Kong Airlines the second Hong Kong-based carrier to operate on this popular route, offering passengers greater convenience and boosting market competition. The Sydney route will be the airline’s second Australian destination this year, following the successful relaunch of seasonal flights to the Gold Coast on January 17.
To celebrate the launch, a signing ceremony was held at Sydney Airport. The event was attended by representatives from Hong Kong Airlines, Sydney Airport, the Chinese Consulate General in Sydney, local officials, and the Tourism Board.
A Milestone for Hong Kong Airlines
Hong Kong Airlines Chairman Mr. Yan Bo highlighted the significance of the new route. “This is a major milestone for us,” he said. “Previously, we only operated flights to Gold Coast and Cairns, providing access to popular tourist destinations in Queensland. Now, we are proud to extend our services to Sydney, Australia’s most iconic city. This new route reflects the efforts of both governments to expand bilateral air traffic rights. We are committed to offering high-quality services and competitive prices, giving travelers more diverse and convenient options.”
Strengthening Ties Between Hong Kong and Australia
Hong Kong Airlines President Mr. Jeff Sun emphasized the broader impact of the new service. “With the three-runway system at Hong Kong International Airport increasing flight capacity, and with support from both governments, we are thrilled to become the second Hong Kong-based airline to operate in Sydney,” he said. “This route will strengthen tourism, economic, and cultural ties between Hong Kong and Australia. Sydney and Hong Kong share a rich aviation history, and we are proud to contribute to this new chapter. The route will also connect travelers to our extensive network in mainland China.”
Sydney Airport Welcomes New Service
Sydney Airport CEO Mr. Scott Charlton expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership. “The arrival of Hong Kong Airlines marks an exciting new chapter for Sydney Airport and strengthens the long-standing connection between Sydney and Hong Kong,” he said. “This daily service not only increases capacity but also gives passengers more options to explore one of Asia’s most dynamic cities.”
Charlton also acknowledged the Australian government’s role in expanding bilateral air traffic rights. “I want to thank the Albanese Government for their efforts in securing these agreements. This new service will boost trade, economic growth, and job creation,” he added.
Government Support for Aviation Growth
The Hon Catherine King MP, Australia’s Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government, welcomed the development. “We are pleased to see Sydney Airport leveraging Australia’s expanded air agreements with Hong Kong,” she said. “The Australian Government is committed to growing our international aviation network. More flights mean more competition, more choice, and a better experience for travelers.”
A330-300 Aircraft to Operate the Route
The Sydney service will be operated using the A330-300 aircraft, featuring both Business and Economy Class cabins. Known for its focus on comfort and high-quality service, Hong Kong Airlines aims to provide passengers with a seamless and enjoyable travel experience.
Expanding Global Reach
As a full-service carrier, Hong Kong Airlines has been actively expanding its network and improving service quality in recent years. The airline currently serves over 30 destinations worldwide. Earlier this year, it resumed flights to Gold Coast and Vancouver, marking its return to the long-haul market and its transformation into a fully-fledged international airline.
Looking ahead, Hong Kong Airlines plans to further optimize its network and expand its fleet to meet growing demand. With a diversified fleet and an extensive route network, the airline aims to offer travelers greater flexibility and convenience, whether they are heading to China, Japan, South Korea, or other popular destinations in the region, as well as to the Americas, Europe, and beyond.
