Holland America Line’s Rotterdam has become the latest cruise ship to face a norovirus outbreak, with over 100 passengers and crew falling ill during its recent voyage. The incident places Holland America alongside other major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Princess, Viking, Silversea, and Sea Cloud, all of which have reported similar gastrointestinal illness outbreaks this year.
Details of the Outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 107 passengers and 12 crew members on the Rotterdam experienced symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The cases occurred during the ship’s Panama Canal cruise, which departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on February 2 and concluded on February 14.
A spokesperson for Holland America stated that most cases were mild and resolved quickly. In response to the outbreak, the cruise line implemented enhanced sanitation measures in coordination with the CDC.
These measures included:
- Thorough and continuous disinfection of the ship
- Isolation of affected passengers and crew
- Additional steps to prevent further spread of the illness
Rising Cruise Outbreaks in 2025
Norovirus outbreaks are more common during colder months, but the CDC emphasizes that cruise ships account for only 1% of all norovirus cases. However, the close quarters and high passenger turnover on cruise ships make them more susceptible to the rapid spread of gastrointestinal illnesses.
With seven outbreaks already reported in early 2025, health officials are advising travelers to take precautions, such as:
- Washing hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoiding contact with shared surfaces when possible
- Reporting any symptoms to onboard medical staff immediately
Staying Safe at Sea
As cruise lines intensify their sanitation efforts, passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant. Simple hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of illness and help ensure a safe and enjoyable voyage.
The Rotterdam outbreak underscores the ongoing challenges cruise lines face in managing health risks, even as they work to provide a safe environment for travelers.
