China has announced that tour groups from ASEAN countries will be allowed to visit the Xishuangbanna region in the southwestern Yunnan province without a visa for up to six days. This new policy, revealed by the National Immigration Administration on Monday, is effective immediately.
The policy applies to tour groups of two or more people from any of the ten ASEAN member countries: Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
To qualify for the visa-free access, the groups must be accompanied by a Chinese travel agency and must enter and leave China together. The measure specifically applies to travel within Xishuangbanna, a popular destination known for its cultural diversity and tropical rainforests.
Xishuangbanna is located in southern Yunnan, bordering Laos and Myanmar. The region is famous for its rich cultural heritage, particularly the Dai ethnic group, whose traditions are closely linked to Thai culture. Visitors can also explore distinctive temples and participate in various ecotourism activities.
The initiative is part of China’s broader effort to position Yunnan as a central hub for exchanges between China and Southeast Asia. State broadcaster CCTV highlighted that the policy aims to boost the local tourism industry, promote cultural exchanges, and strengthen ties between China and ASEAN nations.
Tourists can enter Xishuangbanna through several ports, including the Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport, Mohan Railway Port, or Mohan Highway Port. During their stay, visitors are required to remain within the Xishuangbanna prefecture, which includes the city of Jinghong, Menghai County, and Mengla County.
