Romania has officially become the 43rd country to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP), allowing most of its citizens to travel to the United States for business or tourism without a visa. Under the program, Romanian nationals can stay in the U.S. for up to 90 days without needing to apply for a visa.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) will be updated by March 31 to accommodate visa-free travel for Romanians. Once the update is complete, eligible travelers can apply for authorization through ESTA before their trip.
This move follows a reciprocal agreement, as U.S. citizens have already been able to visit Romania for up to 90 days without a visa. Romania is the latest addition to the Visa Waiver Program, joining three other countries recently included: Qatar (2024), Israel (2023), and Croatia (2021).
The inclusion of Romania in the VWP is expected to strengthen ties between the two nations and facilitate easier travel for both business and leisure purposes.
