As of 9 a.m. on Monday, China’s train ticket booking platform, 12306, had sold more than 214 million tickets for the 2025 Spring Festival travel rush, according to the China State Railway Group Co Ltd.
Monday marked the seventh day of the annual travel rush, known as chunyun. On that day alone, an estimated 13.45 million railway trips were expected across the country. To meet the surging demand, the railway operator added 862 extra trains to its schedule.
The Spring Festival travel rush, or chunyun, coincides with the Lunar New Year, the most important holiday in China. It is often referred to as the largest annual human migration in the world. This year’s chunyun began on January 14 and will conclude on February 22.
This year’s travel rush holds special significance as it is the first since UNESCO added the Spring Festival to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2024. The recognition highlights the festival’s cultural importance and its role in bringing families together during the holiday season.
