Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, has launched legal action against a passenger whose unruly behavior forced a flight to divert, causing significant delays and disruption. The airline is seeking over €15,000 in damages to cover costs incurred during the incident.
The incident occurred on April 9 aboard flight FR7124, traveling from Dublin to Lanzarote. Due to the passenger’s disruptive actions, the plane was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Porto, Portugal. This diversion resulted in an overnight delay, leaving 160 passengers stranded and disrupting their travel plans. Many passengers lost an entire day of their holiday as a result.
Ryanair condemned the passenger’s behavior as “completely unacceptable,” highlighting the frustration caused to travelers who had planned their trips carefully. The airline emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for both passengers and crew, free from disruptions caused by unruly individuals.
The carrier operates a strict zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct and has vowed to take decisive action against those who disrupt flights. Ryanair aims to ensure a positive travel experience for the vast majority of its passengers who follow rules and respect others.
A Ryanair spokesperson stated:
“It is unacceptable that passengers – many of whom are traveling with family or friends to enjoy a relaxing summer holiday – face unnecessary disruption and lose valuable holiday time due to the actions of one unruly individual. Unfortunately, this was the case for passengers on the Dublin to Lanzarote flight in April, which was forced to divert to Porto because of a disruptive passenger. This caused €15,000 in costs, including overnight accommodation, passenger expenses, and landing fees. We have now filed civil proceedings to recover these costs from the passenger.
This case highlights the consequences of disruptive behavior under Ryanair’s zero-tolerance policy. We hope this action will deter future incidents and ensure a comfortable and respectful environment for all passengers and crew.”
The legal action underscores Ryanair’s commitment to holding disruptive passengers accountable for their actions, ensuring the safety and comfort of all travelers onboard its flights.
