With the Canadian dollar currently hovering at 70 cents U.S., Canadian travelers may find themselves looking for ways to stretch their vacation budgets without sacrificing the quality of their experience. Travel experts suggest that a weaker dollar doesn’t necessarily mean scaling back on travel—rather, it’s about making smart choices and finding value in destinations where the exchange rate works in your favor.
Smart Travel Strategies for Budget-Conscious Canadians
Hidar Elmais, a travel advisor with Travel Gurus, shared with CTV News Edmonton on Monday that savvy travelers can still enjoy an affordable vacation by focusing on three key strategies: venturing to off-the-beaten-path locations, booking well in advance, and traveling during shoulder seasons.
“It’s really about the value. It’s what you are going to get out of your vacation,” Elmais explained, emphasizing that exploring less touristy destinations can offer the best bang for your buck.
Affordable Destinations to Consider
Elmais recommends several destinations where the Canadian dollar can go further, including Eastern Europe (Poland, Romania, and Hungary), South America (Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru), and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, and Bali). While some of these places may involve longer flights with fewer direct routes, the lower cost of living and the value offered in these regions can make the extra travel worthwhile.
“Our dollar is so much more valuable in these destinations for an amazing adventure and even relaxation,” he said, suggesting that travelers will find they can enjoy more for less in these regions.
Timing is Everything
Booking at the right time is another essential tip for saving money. Elmais encourages travelers to plan their trips during shoulder seasons—the periods between peak and off-peak seasons—when prices are lower, and destinations are less crowded. If traveling during peak seasons is unavoidable, booking as early as possible can help lock in the best prices.
“Usually, about 320 days prior is when flights come out,” Elmais said. “Peak times should always be booked as soon as possible to get the best rates.”
The Importance of Travel Insurance
While budgeting for a trip, Elmais also stresses the importance of investing in quality travel insurance. Although it may seem like an added expense, travel insurance—especially one with cancellation flexibility—can save travelers from major financial headaches in case plans change unexpectedly.
“Always budget for travel insurance, no matter where you’re going, because so many things can happen in life,” Elmais advised. “Things can change quickly.”
By carefully considering destinations, booking early, and ensuring proper coverage, Canadians can continue to explore the world without letting the weak dollar hold them back.
