Czechs Opt for Domestic Winter Getaways as Costs Rise

As economic pressures rise, Czech residents are increasingly opting to spend their 2024 winter holidays closer to home. According to CzechTourism, nearly half of all travelers this winter plan to stay within Czechia, a noticeable shift from previous years. This growing preference for domestic travel is driven by factors such as cost-effectiveness, convenience, and the allure of the country’s winter offerings.

Domestic Destinations Take the Lead

The Liberec and Hradec Králové regions are seeing a surge in popularity, thanks to their combination of skiing, cross-country skiing trails, and serene hiking paths. Krkonoše and Šumava, two of the country’s most renowned mountainous areas, are particularly in demand, with accommodation bookings currently at their peak.

František Reismüller, director of CzechTourism, points out that the proximity of Czech mountain resorts is a major advantage for local travelers. “While our slopes may not offer the intensity of those found in other countries, they are ideal for families and those seeking active relaxation,” Reismüller said. The modernization of Czech resorts has also played a significant role in this trend. Investments totaling CZK 1.75 billion have enhanced facilities, including new cable cars, efficient snowmaking systems, and dynamic ski pass pricing.

Despite rising expenses, with average costs per person now reaching CZK 8,342—primarily for accommodation (48 percent) and dining (19 percent)—domestic resorts remain competitively priced, with many maintaining or reducing ski pass costs.

A Look Beyond Borders

Although the majority of Czechs are staying within the country, international destinations are still on the radar for some. Approximately 22 percent of Czechs are planning or have already booked winter holidays abroad, a notable increase from just 14 percent last year. Popular choices include Slovakia, with its Tatra Mountains, as well as Austria, Italy, and Hungary, which blend skiing with wellness experiences.

The Dolomites in northern Italy have emerged as a particularly popular destination. Additionally, emerging spots such as Turkey, Bulgaria, and even North America are gaining traction. However, these international trips typically require more extensive planning, with many travelers booking months in advance.

Vacation Trends

When it comes to the length of their trips, the majority of Czechs—around 70 percent—prefer to take week-long vacations. Only a small fraction (6 percent) opt for longer holidays, while 22 percent favor short weekend getaways.

As the cost of travel continues to impact decisions, Czechia’s appeal as a winter destination is stronger than ever, offering a balanced combination of adventure and affordability.
