Skiing has always been my passion—I’ve been hitting the slopes at least once a year for the past 20 years, with a few breaks when my kids were too young to enjoy the slopes. Over the years, we’ve sampled a wide range of accommodations—from all-inclusive hotels to family-friendly chalets and self-catering apartments. However, I had yet to experience what it’s like to truly live the high life in the Alps. So, when the opportunity arose to spend a long weekend in a VIP chalet in Avoriaz, I couldn’t resist the chance to indulge in the luxury and glamour of an A-list experience.
A Dream Chalet in Avoriaz
Nestled in one of the most picturesque and pedestrian-friendly resorts in the French Alps, Avoriaz’s VIP Ski chalets offer a level of indulgence that’s hard to beat. The chalet experience was truly out of this world—whether arriving in style via a horse-drawn carriage as the sun sets, soaking in the jacuzzi in your private underground spa, or sipping champagne on your stunning balcony overlooking the Alps, it felt like stepping into a glamorous winter movie.
Our private balcony boasted panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks, setting the scene for an unforgettable alpine getaway. The chalets themselves were the epitome of luxury—chic and minimalist interiors designed for maximum comfort and function. They were thoughtfully designed to cater to both relaxation and social gatherings. From cozy corners for a quiet evening to expansive dining areas perfect for group dinners, every space was beautifully crafted. Some chalets feature cleverly designed bunkbeds for families, while others are tailored for group getaways with friends—each room, regardless of its layout, is stunning.
Culinary Delights and Après-Ski Indulgence
Each morning began with an impressive breakfast spread: flaky continental pastries, an assortment of cheeses, charcuterie, fresh fruits, and a range of cooked-to-order options like eggs and porridge. After a morning spent conquering the 650 kilometers of interconnected pistes at Avoriaz, we were greeted back at the chalet with freshly baked cakes and a steaming pot of tea. And if you fancied a glass of champagne to unwind, it was ready and waiting.
The chalets are essentially ski-in, ski-out, so you can transition seamlessly from the cold slopes to the warm embrace of luxury. With heated boot rooms and fluffy slippers awaiting your return, the experience was effortlessly glamorous. Inside, the chalet felt like a boutique hotel. Our chalet featured a private basement pool and jacuzzi, perfect for relaxing sore muscles after a day on the slopes. There’s nothing quite like sipping champagne in your own private spa to truly feel like you’re living the dream.
Entertainment and Unique Experiences
The open-plan living spaces were cozy yet chic, providing the perfect setting for long dinners followed by lively après-ski gatherings around the fire. Dinner was an event to be savored—gourmet three-course meals, paired with unlimited wine, were prepared by our personal chalet host. The staff at VIP Ski were exceptional; our host even fetched his guitar for a sing-along after dinner. While they’re happy to blend into the background, they’re also a great resource for advice and recommendations on how to make the most of your time in Avoriaz.
For those who want to try something beyond skiing, the chalet’s hosts can arrange a variety of activities. We took part in an in-house cocktail masterclass, where we learned to mix mojitos and martinis under expert guidance—it was a fun, interactive experience and a skill we could take home with us. Another highlight was skijoring—a thrilling activity where you’re pulled by a horse while on skis. While it was more challenging than I expected, it provided an exhilarating ride through a snow-covered forest, offering views we would have missed on foot or skis alone.
Après-Ski and Dining at La Folie Douce
A visit to La Folie Douce, a world-renowned party hotspot at the top of the mountain, was another unforgettable experience. Famous for its lively atmosphere, delicious food, and flowing rosé, we enjoyed an incredible lunch with live music and a festive crowd. As the day wore on, we found ourselves dancing in our ski boots—a perfect end to our VIP weekend in Avoriaz.
Skiing in Avoriaz: A Skier’s Paradise
Of course, the skiing itself is a huge draw. Avoriaz is a skier’s paradise, offering something for everyone. From gentle green runs for beginners to challenging black pistes and off-piste powder fields for more experienced skiers, the resort caters to all skill levels. As a confident skier, I was eager to try some off-piste runs, and the lessons arranged by the chalet helped push me out of my comfort zone. One of our group members was new to snowboarding, and the progress he made during our time at Avoriaz was impressive.
One of the unique aspects of Avoriaz is its compact, car-free layout, which makes everything easily accessible. Ski instructors are readily available in the main ski zone, and it’s simple to meet up for lunch or après-ski drinks. The resort’s design ensures that both beginners and experts can enjoy the slopes in the same area, making it perfect for mixed groups.
Hassle-Free Luxury
For me, the best thing about the VIP Ski experience was not having to worry about the details—something that’s often not the case on a typical holiday. From lift passes and ski equipment hire to arranging outings and bespoke experiences, everything was taken care of for us. The chalet was stunning, the food and drink exceptional, and the entire experience was completely hassle-free. It’s the kind of luxury escape that’s perfect for families or groups of friends looking for something special. While it comes at a premium price, it’s definitely an experience worth saving up for.
